What is the main difference between teaching, coaching and mentoring? Why is it important to know the difference between these 3 terms?
Teaching is more focused on the delivery of new information, knowledge and skills on a subject, coaching focuses more on improving and enhancing performance, and mentoring involves long term development throughout various aspects of life. (it is typically career driven) It is important to know the difference between these 3 terms because knowing the difference between them will allow you to apply the different methods to different situations, and also allows you to mesh approaches when necessary.
Teaching: Our curriculum is meant to teach the basic techniques of ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop. This includes terminology, history, and techniques.
Coaching: We correct and demonstrate how to properly perform various moves.
Facilitating: we allow students to apply their knowledge of the various styles at the end of each unit through the use of student choreography. They also apply this when choreographing for the end of the year showcase.
Mentoring: Answering questions they have regarding dance and careers as a whole. Giving them resources to look into for their future interests.
