The Creative Method

Why are these music props important for dance teachers?  It is important to have a portable speaker, a playlist on Spotify, and a binder with the songs and lyrics. The lyrics are important so that students can sing the song and move to the lyrics. These props are important so that the students can be engaged with what they are learning and allow the teacher to use different materials and teaching methods.  Teaching Strategies: - community circle dance - mirroring - understanding improvisation and play - energy and emotions - patterns inclusive dance: - teaching students at different levels of dance  - benefits everyone - reptition is important  - 3 qualities: creativity, clarity, and commitment  - creativity: creative method, thinking out the box - clarity: say what you mean, make sure your ideas are being conveyed clearly, share your objectives when doing tasks and exercises   - commitment: work towards discovery

Summative vs. Formative learning and an example lesson plan

summative VS formative learning formative basically has segments of work and goals you do, its more hands on (think an approach that builds upon itself) summative assessment is more of a summary of everything learned (i.e. quizez, exams, finals)  Parts of the Lesson Plan Title : Ballet 3-Dance Making Date : October 7, 2024 Component : Dance Making Objective : For students to use what they previously learned from the barre, across the floor, and center exercises to create a 2-minute piece. Example of a Creative Dance Class Plan

I ntro: Have the students make up a move they believe describes them and standing in a circle everyone will repeat the moves and names of those before them. This would help students remember each others names and build a sense of community.  Warm up:  progressive movement from a laying position all the way to standing (laying, seated, mid-level, standing)- increase intensity Intro of Theme: our theme will be elements of nature (water, fire, wind, earth) Assessment: have the students pick elements in group and do choreography and perform it in front of each other (they should make two 8 counts) Cool down: reverse the warm up, have the students move from standing to laying and go from higher intensity to lower intensity)

The Kinesthetic Loop + an Example of How it can be Applied

The process regulating and guiding voluntary movement is called the kinesthetic sense, it involves both movement awareness and decision making. Movement forms are patterns that are aesthetically fulfilling. There is a link between nature and movement as well as movement and humaness. As age develops so does the movement.  Creative movement is functional(physical activity), aesthetic(beauty), and healthy(emotions) Proprioception is information the brain receives based on our senses. (before we interperet that sensatiion) The kinesthetic experience is a loop of communication between the body and brain.  Self identification with experience. (being aware of your emotional relationship to information coming to you via the senses) Not all forms of dance are based off moving based on feelings, some are just replications of movements taught.  The contraction and release of muscles is rhythmic, which is why movement tends to flow and ebb.  Dance elements are, the body, energy...

Building a Business + Teaching, Coaching, and Mentoring

1. Business plan  2. leasing opportunities/ owning the space 3. how will you create a space that allows your students' to thrive  4. employees 4. uniform/ dress code 6. website for advertisement  7. pricing   What is the main difference between teaching, coaching and mentoring? Why is it important to know the difference between these 3 terms?  Teaching is more focused on the delivery of new information, knowledge and skills on a subject, coaching focuses more on improving and enhancing performance, and mentoring involves long term development throughout various aspects of life. (it is typically career driven) It is important to know the difference between these 3 terms because knowing the difference between them will allow you to apply the different methods to different situations, and also allows you to mesh approaches when necessary.  Teaching: Our curriculum is meant to teach the basic techniques of ballet, modern, jazz, and hip-hop. This includes t...

Types of Thinking, Dopamine, and the Ideal Studio Space

There are two modes of thinking: 1. Convergent: taking loose ideas and linking them together into a common or specific framework in order to get a specific outcome.   -compile several thoughts into one greater idea/picture 2. Divergent: brainstorming many possible ideas/ solutions  Divergent thinking is used to form many possible ideas, while convergent thinking can be used to refine those ideas and lead to the actual creation of those ideas.  Dopamine is a neuromodultor and it is involved in motivation - helps us direct attention outside of us, and is related to convergent and diverent thinking and creativity - when dopamine levels are high people are inclined to think divergently (more prone to creativity and exploration of new ideas) - when the levels of dopamine are low divergent thinking is less likely - if dopamine is too high there is a plataeu it doesnt make you more creative so it doesn't help with divergent thinking The process of having original ide...

Emotional and Social Learning/Teaching Philosophy

Why is it important to know the balance between task and relationship-oriented approaches? If it skews more towards task-oriented then the students will not feel connected to you as a teacher. This may lead them to feel uncomfortable and fearful, and they also may dread going to your class giving them a negative learning experience. It makes the students think you don't truly care about them unless it comes to their grades. If it skews towards being relationship-oriented then the students will be more prone to misbehaving, and they won't learn because they see you as a friend, not a figure of authority. If there is a balance students will stay connected to the teacher, feel more comfortable, and learn in a non-disruptive environment.  To promote social learning, students will be put into groups to create a piece using the technique learned in class at the end of each unit—groups will be randomly assigned. As part of the procedures and curriculum, students will journal how they ...

Classroom Management

Beliefs/guiding principles: Community: I want everyone who enters my class to feel a sense of community within each other and the classroom space. I know many may use dance as an outlet and a break from their other strenuous classes, so I feel that a sense of community would help relieve any doubts or stresses from the school day.  Our Classroom at a Glance:  A space where students can explore their creative outlets and learn discipline through learning various styles of dance. Main Rule: Students should respect me, themselves, each other, and the space.  Action Plan: Procedure 1: attendance - dancers will come in from the hall in an orderly fashion and place their items into the assigned cubbies on the side of the room - dancers must remove their waterbottles and journals from their book bag and place them on top of the cubbies (or near them at barre if applicable)\ - dancers must leave their phone inside their bookbags unless it is a student choreography day and ...

The Hollistic Curriculum
