Classroom Management

 Beliefs/guiding principles:

Community: I want everyone who enters my class to feel a sense of community within each other and the classroom space. I know many may use dance as an outlet and a break from their other strenuous classes, so I feel that a sense of community would help relieve any doubts or stresses from the school day.

Our Classroom at a Glance:

A space where students can explore their creative outlets and learn discipline through learning various styles of dance.

Main Rule:

Students should respect me, themselves, each other, and the space.

Action Plan:

Procedure 1: attendance

- dancers will come in from the hall in an orderly fashion and place their items into the assigned cubbies on the side of the room

- dancers must remove their waterbottles and journals from their book bag and place them on top of the cubbies (or near them at barre if applicable)\

- dancers must leave their phone inside their bookbags unless it is a student choreography day and they need music

- if dancers find anything within their cubby they are to turn it into me ASAP so I can put it into the Lost and Found bin and ask others that share the cubby in prior classes

Procedure 2: Journaling/utilization of journals

- the journals are to be utilized for corrections, gratitude journaling, and self reflection

- they can be used with any free time where I am not going over a correction and as long as another classmate is not demonstrating a dance

- these journals will not be collected as they are for the dancer's benefit, journals may not be shared between dancers unless the dancers authorize it

Procedure 3: across the floor/center/learning combos

- dancers should spread out into windows within the studio space (allowing them to see themselves and correct themselves)

- there are no assigned spots, but if dancers become disruptive there will be assigned spots and lines

- dancers should not be talking while others are dancing, instead they should be watching and taking in any corrections

Procedure 3: student choreography days

- students are allowed to utilize their phones for music selections, use of social media and messaging apps is not allowed, if caught the dancer's privledge to use their phone for music will be revoked and I will select their song for them

-students should be spread out as much as possible, after the 5 minute break dancers will have a chance to attempt their choreography with more space

- students will have 1.5 classes to choreograph their routine and the last 30 minutes of the specified student choreography classes will be used to show their pieces

- students are allowed to write notes on others dances whether that be opinionated or technical

- students will still follow the entrance and end of day procedures

Procedure 4: lost and found

- student should bring any found items to me

- i will place a sticky note with the date and where it was found on the item

- all lost and found items will be placed in a bin that goes into my locked closet door, in the case of a substitute I will notify them of this procedure

Procedure 5: what to do during free time

- stretch

-go over technique

- ask me questions

-journal

-go over choreography

Procedure 6: asking questions

- if it is a small question or something you know I stated earlier in the class ask 3 people before you ask me (ask 3 before you ask me)

     - listening is an important part of dance training and discipline

- If no one has the answer I will be more than glad to answer the question, as long as it is asked when I prompt you to ask questions or during a break

- in order to remember questions I would recommend writing them and the answers in your journals so you can refer to them later

Procedure 7:  fire drill

- dancers will leave their items in the cubbies

Procedure 8: Injured dancers

Procedure 9: End of day/ exiting the classroom

Procedure 10: 5 minute break

Positive consequences:

- Dancer of the month and dancer of the week

- pass to the dance room from another class

- end of the year banquet with superlatives and awards

- free pass to a pep rally

Understanding and correcting behaviors:

mild behavior issues will be resolved by pulling the student asside and correcting the behavior, if it proceeds there will be a call out during class

Ongoing issues will result in emails and calls home and in worse situations the dancer will be sent to the office

Crisis Plan:

we will follow any guidelines outlined by the school I work for

when it comes to fights students will immediately be sent to the principles office and security will be called to escort the students there
